Howletts 5k Cheetah Run - Running to Save the World’s Fastest Cat.
This year's race edition will be celebrating and supporting the rewilding of Edie, the South African cheetah.
Rewilding The First Captive Cheetah from Australia
Few conservation stories capture the imagination quite like the journey of Edie, a female cheetah whose path spans continents, collaborations, and a commitment to restoring one of Africa’s most iconic predators. Today, Edie thrives as a fully rewilded cheetah at Mziki Reserve, in South Africa, but her story begins thousands of kilometres away at the Wild Cat Conservation Centre in Australia. The Aspinall Foundation was one of the key partners in the rewilding journey as we are on the forefront of cheetah rewilding in South Africa.
Edie arriving in the wild
Her relocation to South Africa formed part of an international partnership aimed at bolstering the genetic diversity and long-term stability of cheetah populations in the region. With global cheetah numbers continuing to decline, such cross-border cooperation is increasingly vital.
Edie's release into the wild
As she continues to flourish, Edie offers inspiration not only for conservationists but for supporters like you. Her life in Mziki is more than a success story; it is a testament to the power of partnership and the profound impact that thoughtful, science-based rewilding can achieve.
Why is conservation work so vital & how do The Aspinall Foundation help?
The cheetah population is still categorised as endangered by the IUCN. There has been a significant drop in population in the wild caused mainly by the pet trade, poaching and habitat-loss.
The Aspinall Foundation is the world’s FIRST organisation to successfully rewild captive-UK-born cheetahs from the UK to South Africa and captive-Canada-born cheetahs to Zimbabwe.
This vital work is only possible thanks to the generosity of friends and supporters.
