World Lion Day at Port Lympne Hotel & Reserve
On 10th August 2026, the world comes together to celebrate World Lion Day - a powerful reminder of the beauty, strength and vulnerability of one of Earth’s most iconic species. Founded in 2013 by conservationists in partnership with National Geographic, the day shines a spotlight on the urgent need to protect, conserve and celebrate the world’s remaining lion populations.
At Port Lympne Hotel & Reserve, this global moment becomes something truly extraordinary. Here, you can mark World Lion Day not just by learning about lions, but by living alongside them in one of the most exclusive wildlife stays in the UK: Lion Lodge.
Why World Lion Day Matters
Once roaming across vast regions of Africa, Asia and even Europe, lions (Panthera leo) are now found only in sub-Saharan Africa and a small population in India. Today, it’s estimated that just 20,000–39,000 lions remain in the wild, with numbers continuing to decline.
Classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN Red List, lions face increasing threats from:

As apex predators, lions play a critical role in maintaining the balance of ecosystems. Without them, entire landscapes would change, making their conservation essential not just for wildlife, but for biodiversity as a whole.
World Lion Day exists to inspire action, raise awareness and encourage global support for protecting these magnificent animals.
Meet Kamari and Hasani: Your Wild Neighbours
At Lion Lodge, your stay is shared with two truly majestic residents; brothers Kamari and Hasani.
Kamari
Hasani
These striking African lions offer guests a rare glimpse into the lives of a species often only seen from afar. Hasani, the more confident of the pair, is quick to investigate his surroundings, while Kamari’s quieter nature brings a calm, watchful presence.
From the moment you arrive, you are immersed in their world, watching them roam, rest and interact just beyond your window.
As well as observing Kamari and Hasani from the comfort of your Lion Lodge, you'll also discover the Port Lympne pride as you explore the reserve on your personal golf buggy. The pride can often be seen lazily sunbathing or roaming their enormous 8 acre habitat – Europe’s largest non-drive through lion enclosure! Hunter, a magnificent male lion, rules the pride with his partner, a formidable lioness named Oudrika. They share the habitat with Kulinda, Binti and Mila – Oudrika’s offspring with her previous partner, Adras, and Hunter and Oudrika’s own offspring Amali and Jamila.
