Protecting gorillas in Gabon
In June 2017 our Chairman, Damian Aspinall and his wife, Victoria, made a special trip to our project in Gabon to oversee the transfer of a young gorilla group. Mbwambe, Rapha and Dikele made the journey from the sanctuary where they met and became firm friends, to our Gorilla Protection Project in the Batéké Plateau National Park.

Damian and Victoria met up with Djalta and Ima; two male gorillas from Howletts Wild Animal Park in Kent, who made the journey back to the wild in 2003.
The transfer of Mbwambe, Rapha and Dikele
The transfer of Mbwambe, Rapha and Dikele to Gabon, was the latest step in our Back to the Wild programme. The programme, started in 1996, is designed to introduce captive born western lowland gorillas to protected areas of their natural habitat.
Releasing captive gorillas into the wild
For 20 years The Aspinall Foundation has been reintroducing captive gorillas back into the wild from Howletts and Port Lympne wildlife parks in England to their million acres in West Africa.
The next release
The next stage of our Back to the Wild programme saw the transfer of four silverback brothers from Port Lympne Reserve in Kent, to our conservation project in Congo.
