Tugar is a hand raised male that has gradually transformed from a cute little cub into a true gentle giant, currently weighing in at over 200kg! He is part of an international captive breeding program to save this endangered species and has been paired with a female from Norway named Ingrid Alexandra (after the Princess of Norway). Ingrid arrived in 2005 aged 18 months and while she was a little wary of the immense Tugar at first, she soon relaxed once she saw how gentle he was.
While Tugar is very friendly and affectionate, he can be something of an alley cat at times and has been known to spray unsuspecting visitors to his enclosure…be careful to back away if he backs up!
Tugar, Ingrid and their cubs continue to do well and we think the cubs will be with us for another 8 or 9 months before they are moved to another park to benefit the international breeding programme. They have all enjoyed a playful year here at Port Lympne and the cubs have been keeping poor Tug on his toes! He still loves the attention he receives from a passing keeper and can often be seen going all gooey around the Big Cat staff!
