Suliman the Lion
Location: Port Lympne
Date Of Birth: 01/01/2001
Suliman was born in 2001 at Rabat Zoo in Morocco and, while we don’t have too much information about his early years, we assume he must have had a lot of human contact as he's always been very friendly towards keepers. Since arriving, he has been a prolific breeder and has already been put into breeding retirement to avoid over-representation of his blood-line. Together with Saffiya, he is responsible for about 10% of all Barbary lions - a truly magnificent achievement! Since he was castrated in 2007, he has unfortunately lost most of his mane after his testosterone level dropped post-surgery. However, this hasn’t affected his status and he still remains king of his domain, dictating who eats what and when, where they play and where they rest!
Suliman’s enclosure is located at the bottom of the park next to the Indian tigers, and by night his booming roar carries out across the Romney Marsh. He can usually be seen relaxing on the platform, but if you can't spot him there try looking amongst the trees as he often retreats to this spot for a catnap in the shade. Suliman is very friendly, gentle and affectionate. Playful by nature, his favourite toy is a bowling ball. He loves attention and likes to be scratched!
