Spot tail (Spot as she is known by keepers) is the alpha female of our resident pack, her alpha male and partner is Tatu a big rough looking male that used to in his younger days enjoy a good scrap, all behind him now it is Spot who is the boss here!
Spot was born in 2007 and had quite a tough start to life after her mother was found collapsed in the enclosure the week she was due to give birth, whilst at the vet hospital she was given an emergency caesarean, we pulled out 16 pups that were not breathing and after some stimulation got 14 breathing (unfortunately 2 were still born) sadly we lost the mother pretty much straight away despite the best efforts of the vet team.
So this meant we had to hand rear them, tough job as they require 24hr care and feeding round the clock every 2 hrs (this is the same for most hand raised animals but you don’t normally have 14 to feed, by the time you have finished 1 feeding session you need to go again, we managed to get all pups feeding but due to them being premature and us not being as good as a real dog mum (as they are proper super mums), we expected to lose a few maybe all of them, Spot-tail or 302 as she was then known (all known by the last 3 digits of the microchip number) was noticeably smaller than the others(runt of the litter) and became critical at least 3 times during the first 2-3 weeks needing medical assistance, we lost 8 pups over the course of just 2 weeks from what can only be called fading puppy syndrome, it seems that there is nothing really wrong then over the course of 10-12 hrs stop feeding and give up, however 6 of them 2 males and 4 females including 302 (Spot-tail) were fighters and never gave up. Spot is now a mum herself - and a fantastic one at that!
