Saffiya the Lion
Location: Port Lympne
Date Of Birth: 20/07/1999
Saffiya's mother rejected her at two weeks of age so she was hand raised by the section’s then-head keeper, Adrian Harland. Leo by name and nature she was a cub with a feisty temperament – taking on alternating personalities of lion and lamb! She was paired with Suliman in 2001 and went on to become a fantastic mother. She has successfully reared several litters, and as well as being very caring towards her youngsters, she has also never forgotten the keepers that helped raise her. Saffiya and Suliman have now been put in to breeding retirement to avoid over-representation of their blood-lines. Saffiya remains in good health and is probably enjoying a well earned rest!
Saffiya is a very relaxed and affectionate lioness, and having been hand reared she still expects extra attention from keepers and will run up to the fence to snatch a caress when she sees them. The most playful of the lions in her group, she can invariably be found sleeping the day away on her platform or in the grass near the front of the enclosure - which is located at the bottom of the park, next to the Indian Tigers. However when she is in a bad mood she can get very grumpy with anyone that comes close, and will sometimes retreat to the trees for some peace and quiet.
