Rina & Oberon The Spectacled Bears
Location: Port Lympne
Date Of Birth: 03/01/2013
Spectacled bears, otherwise known as Andean or short-faced bears come from South America and although very adaptable to all kinds of terrain and habitat, they are usually found in cloud forest. Males can be almost twice the size of females weighing in at 100-140kg and 70-90kg respectively.
Although by definition they are carnivores, they eat a large amount of fruit, spending much of their time foraging. Rina is 3 years old, she was born and raised in Tierpark Berlin. She recently left her mother, grandmother and cousin there for a new life with us. She weighs in at only 45kg but what she lacks in size she makes up with in bag loads of attitude. She is half the size of Oberon but keeps him well and truly in check.
She is currently enjoying her new facility, climbing and exploring all the furniture and even digging in some old badger holes around the exhibit. Oberon is also 3 years old, born and raised in Antwerp zoo. He really is a big baby, keepers at Antwerp tell us they practically had to prize him away from his mother when it was time for him to go out on his own. Since being at port Lympne he has helped settle Rina down as he is very calm and gentle. He does however like to break things, although always breaking things calmly and specifically, testing every branch and barrel for a weakness. The bears will be sharing their new home with other South American animals, including capuchin monkeys, capybara and ring tailed coatis – the collective noun of which is a party!
