Date Of Birth: 27/04/2005
Jara is part of our Howletts herd and in April 2011 she celebrated her 6th birthday. Mischievious and inquisitive, she likes to create her own bit of havoc when she enters the paddock in the morning; chasing birds and charging into the hay with her ears out! As she approaches maturity, her tusks are starting to come through and her mothering instincts are also starting to show.
Whether they want the attention or not, she has developed a habit of following younger calves Etana and Uzuri around, and enjoys guarding the young calves. Something of a wolf in sheep's clothing, Jara won't hesitate to race over and check on them if she hears a noise, but is not averse to pinching their food either! She can often be seen sparring with her younger half sister Jama and, like most siblings, they enjoy a bit of rough and tumble! Jara adopted “Manzi” at the end of 2010 after Manzi lost her mother 'Justa' and as a result, Manzi has blossomed from a deeply traumatized and very ill little elephant into a healthy, well adjusted member of the herd with an amazing personality and great affection for her keepers.
Manzi can often be seen trying, albeit unsuccessfully, to suckle from Jara and at night she can usually be found curled up between Jara’s legs when our keepers drop in to give her an evening bottle feed. We are all immensely proud of Jara and grateful for the support of her many adopters.
