Arina the Tiger
Date Of Birth: 17/08/2012
Arina, our female tiger cub was hand raised from birth by our Head of Carnivore Section Ben Warren and Damian Aspinall. Damian, Ben and his team have developed a special bond with her over time and she views Ben as a surrogate parent.
Sadly, Arina’s brother, who used to share the enclosure with her, died of a congenital health condition and since then keepers have been keen to step up their contact with her to ensure that she has proper exercise and stimulation. This interaction is viewed as extremely helpful to Arina’s health, welfare and development – Arina looks to us for everything she would look to her parents and siblings for and it will also help us develop a greater insight into her behaviour.
Arina has a deformed leg and this close contact may help us treat her, if necessary, in the future – and may even lessen the likelihood of having to undertake future sedations. Arina was born with a condition which affects her bone density and although this is improving dramatically the team want to ensure she is strong enough before considering putting her with other tigers. She is a real character, a firm favourite amongst keepers and staff and a pleasure to watch when visiting Howletts.
