IUCN STATUS: Least concern
Endemic to Madagascar, greater hedgehog tenrecs are nocturnal insectivores. During the day they shelter in tree crevices or small holes in the ground. Tenrecs were one of the first mammal species to colonize the island of Madagascar!
They can live for up to 10 years in the wild and up to 13 years in captivity. When threatened, they have the ability to roll up completely into a ball, tucking their head and limbs toward their belly.
