IUCN STATUS: Extinct in the wild
Panthera leo leo
The Barbary lion has been extinct in the wild since the 1940s with only around 100 of this subspecies still existing in captivity around the world. These lions are all descended from lions held in the King of Morocco’s private menagerie. Famed for their aggressive nature, it is believed that they were the lions used in Roman times to fight against gladiators in the Coliseum.
All subspecies of lion are now threatened in the wild mainly due to conflict with people.
