Howletts Wild Animal Park near Canterbury in Kent is part of a charity-based organisation committed to protecting rare and endangered animals from extinction through captive breeding and re-introduction programmes.
The Estates Department at Howletts Wild Animal Park have a permanent vacancy for a full time Senior Gardener.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the maintenance and development of the grounds and gardens at the Wild Animal Park. Duties will mainly include grass cutting and strimming along with hedge cutting, maintaining cleanliness and appearance of paths, steps and walkways, planting and upkeep of annual boarders, baskets, tubs and urns, maintenance of herbaceous, shrub and mixed boarders, interior flower displays and glasshouse duties.
Good knowledge of plants, gardening practices and use of garden machinery is essential, as well as an eye for detail, a desire to achieve high standards and the ability to work on own initiative. You must have a willingness to learn from other members of the horticulture team and by participating in training where available as well as being able to pass on your own knowledge to other team members and volunteers. A keen interest and appreciation for plants and horticulture and enthusiasm for the outdoors is also vital.
A valid driving licence is essential as you will be driving company vehicles. We are looking for someone who is motivated, enthusiastic and flexible and happy to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
The role is 40 hours per week worked five days out of seven. Working hours are 8:00am – 4:30pm.
