This policy governs all pages hosted at aspinallfoundation.org. It does not apply to pages hosted by other organisations to which we may link and whose privacy policies may differ.

For the purposes of this policy, the term "supporter" refers to someone who has given a financial donation via our secure server.

We do not collect personally identifiable information on our web site unless you voluntarily choose to give it to us via an electronic mail message, a phone call, by signing up as a supporter, or by postal mail. Even when you choose to give us information, we keep it confidential, and we bind suppliers who work with us by these conditions as well.

We do not sell or rent web-generated mailing lists or other personally identifiable information outside aspinallfoundation.org.

We do not provide mailing lists to outside agencies unless they agree to be bound by the terms of this Privacy Policy.  

When submitting web forms on our website we may pass the information to 3rd party agencies for advanced textual analysis to help combat SPAM. We use the MolloM service and their privacy policy can be found at http://mollom.com/web-service-privacy-policy.

We will never send you unsolicited materials as a result of participating in our sponsorship schemes.

If you sign up in an online action such as sponsoring an animal you may be given the option to participate in future on-line actions, to receive news of actions results, to receive a newsletter or further information, or to be invited to contribute to aspinallfoundation.org. You will always be given the option to decline any or all of those choices.

If you become a supporter of aspinallfoundation.org and The Aspinall Foundation you may be given the option to participate in on-line events or to receive a newsletter or further information. Again, you will always be given the option to decline.

When you apply for the Howletts or Port Lympne Passport we will take a photograph of you. This photo will be used to identify you as the legitimate holder of your passport card when you visit the park. The Passport can only be used for admission by the person named on the front of the card and we may check Passport cards and photo ID on entrance to the park.  This photo and any personal information you give us will be stored on our secure database, and will be used solely for identification purposes and will not be available to third parties.  Your photograph will be used only for the administration of the Passport scheme. All the data we collect will be treated as confidential and used in keeping with our obligations under the Data Protection Act 1998. We may from time to time analyze your data. This is confidential and will not be made available to external companies.  Customers under the age of 16 require parental consent when providing any personal information.  Customers who sign up to the Passport Scheme will be automatically subscribed to email Newsletters. The Newsletter will be sent out periodically and provide updates, information on special events, new contests, and special offers. This Newsletter can be cancelled at any time by following the simple steps outlined at the bottom of the Newsletter.

Information collected for fundraising purposes is collected on a server we own and maintain. The main server is housed with a hosting company whose privacy policies conform to our own.

Information in our website logs is not personally identifiable, and we make no attempt to link that information with the individuals that actually browse the site. The server collects information about the date and time in which our web site was accessed and the internet address of the server from which you linked to our site. We may also track, anonymously, a user's movement within the site. We use this data to improve our site performance and to evaluate traffic statistics, such as the times of day and days of week at which we see peak traffic, and to assess the relative popularity of different areas of the site.

 

From time to time we will collect personally identifiable information for the sole purpose of contacting you to find out why a transaction did not complete. We store this information only for the length of time required to send the email. We may pass this information on to a 3rd party in order to facilitate the sending of such emails, and all 3rd parties conform to the terms of this privacy policy and will not retain your information, nor share it with additional companies.

A cookie is a tiny element of data that our site can send to your browser, which may then be stored on your hard drive. Our web site uses cookies to customise certain options. For example, if you sponsor an animal online we will ask if you want your sponsored animal to greet you when you next come back to the site. This small amount of information does NOT contain any private information stored on your computer. You may set your web browser to notify you when you receive a cookie, or to disable cookies altogether. We do not use cookies to track your content choices.


We are committed to providing our supporters with ways of monitoring and amending the information you provide to us, and are currently developing the tools to do so.

Our online payment supplier's pages use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL): a security protocol that provides communications privacy over the Internet. The protocol allows client/server applications to communicate in a way that is designed to prevent eavesdropping, tampering, or message forgery. It encrypts all of your personal information, including credit card number, name, and address, so that it cannot be read as the information travels over the Internet. While on a secure page, such as our donation form, the lock icon on the bottom of Web browsers such as Opera, Netscape Navigator, and Microsoft Internet Explorer becomes locked, as opposed to un-locked, or open, when you are just 'surfing'.

Tickets are valid for the specified date and park only. You will receive an e mail confirmation with a copy of your ticket. Remember that you must bring your printed ticket with you on the day of your visit to be admitted to the park. Failure to do so may affect your entry to the park. Tickets purchased online may be upgraded to the Howletts or Port LympnePassport or Gold Card on entry to the park, subject to an additional charge. 

It is the responsibility of the purchaser to check that all information supplied for the purchase of online tickets is correct prior to completion of the purchase. Failure to do so may result in additional charges at the entry kiosk or voiding of the ticket.

Entry to Howletts or Port Lympne Wild Animal Parks will only be granted on presentation of a valid print at home ticket. All printed tickets must be clearly legible and it is the responsibility of the purchaser to present and relinquish them on entry to the parks.

Any additional visitors accompanying an online ticket purchaser will be charged the standard entry fee.

Proof of entitlement is required at the entry kiosk for certain ticket types e.g. students.

Howletts and Port Lympne Wild Animal Parks reserve the right to refuse entry and to make any changes to the structure of the parks.

Safari at Port Lympne is subject to availability on a first come first served basis.

Please note that children aged 16 or under must be accompanied by an adult aged 18 or over to gain entry to the park.

Opt-Out donation

Visitors will be admitted upon payment of the Standard Tariff if they choose not to contribute the additional 10% voluntary donation.

Refund Policy

At Port Lympne and Howletts we have large enclosures, designed with the animals in mind. We let the animals choose if they want to be seen by the public and we never shut the animals into ‘viewing’ areas.

In certain weathers, many of the animals will choose to take shelter in their indoor sections, or seek shade in the foliage of their surroundings.  With this in mind, please note that we do not offer refunds if visitors feel they have not seen a certain amount of animals and we do not offer refunds for inclement weather.

TESCO CLUBCARD

You must exchange your Clubcard vouchers for tokens – we (the supplier) do not accept Clubcard vouchers.

Tokens cannot be used in food outlets or shops. Tokens can only be used against single visit admission and cannot be used for special events and/or shows and does not apply to and is not redeemable against group bookings, the Howletts and Port Lympne Passport or Gold Card.  Present your token/s at the Howletts or Port Lympne main entrance ticket office to redeem. Photocopies are not accepted. Visitors under 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult aged 18 or over. A token is not a pre-booked ticket. No change is given from reward tokens. Tokens cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer, scheme or promotion. Tokens cannot be used for any “buy in full” reward. Howletts and Port Lympne reserve the right to refuse admission.

ENTRY CONDITIONS

Tesco Clubcard Vouchers are not valid in conjunction with any other offers.

Children under 3 years are admitted free to Howletts & Port Lympne Wild Animal Parks.

Children aged 16 years and under must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Howletts and Port Lympne Wild Animal Parks reserve the right to refuse admission.

Dogs and other pets are not permitted to the park. Please do not leave your dogs in the car. We recommend that you make alternative arrangements for your pets before visiting.

As parts of Port Lympne are quite steep, we offer reduced admission for less-able guests and have selected routes for wheelchairs. Please ask for advice. This discount is not available with online tickets.

One free carer will be admitted with a disabled guest when purchasing a day ticket or the carer can purchase a concessionary annual pass which can be passed to any carer who accompanies the disabled person on any visit.  One free carer will be admitted for a single day visit when a disabled guest purchases a concessionary membership.

Our parks are very different from conventional zoos. The animals, which include rare and endangered species, are able to live and breed in conditions as close to their natural habitat as possible. This can mean that when the weather is inclement some of our animals will seek shelter in their indoor enclosures, which are always open to them but not on view to the public and you may wish to consider this when planning your visit.

Please do not feed the animals as they receive strictly controlled diets and you may cause them harm.

Please do not bang on windows at exhibits or climb on or cross the safety barriers.

In the interests of safety barbeques, balls, balloons, scooters, bikes, rollerblades or skates are not permitted in the parks.

Howletts & Port Lympne Wild Animal Parks reserve the right to alter or cancel any events, presentations or feeding times without notice if required. Visitors are reminded that any advertised exhibits, attractions or facilities may be closed, removed, altered or otherwise unavailable at any time for safety, operational or animal welfare reasons.

 

EVENT TERMS & CONDITIONS - THESE APPLY TO ALL EVENTS

This ticket cannot be exchanged or refunded unless the event is cancelled. Each member of the audience must possess a valid ticket.

Under 16’s must be accompanied by an adult aged 18 years or over.

No dogs are permitted within the parks.

The Aspinall Foundation Terms and Conditions
 
Mobile Prize Draw – terms and conditions
1. The draw is open to residents of the UK aged 18 and over, excluding employees and their immediate families of The Aspinall Foundation (“the Organisers”), their agents and anyone else professionally connected with the promotion.
 
2. The promotional period starts at 00.01am on 1st Jan 2016 and closes for text entry at 11.59pm on 31st December 2016. Postal entries close at midday on 2nd Jan 2016.
 
3. To enter, simply text BACK to 83222. This will cost 50p plus your standard network rate. On entry, you will receive a message confirming you entry. If you do not wish to make a donation, you should reply to the number given quoting ‘STOP’ with 45 minutes of sending the first text. If an entrant does not text stop within 45 minutes of receiving text confirmation of their entry, the £3 donation will be deducted from their account.
 
4. The Aspinall Foundation (registered charity number 326567) will receive at least £0.20p from every ticket entry and £3 from every donation made.
 
5. Text entries that are received after the competition closing date will not be counted but will incur the cost of a standard network rate text and may still incur the 50p entry charge and £3 donation.
 
6. Text entries that are incomplete or contain an incorrect keyword will be deemed invalid and will not count as an entry, but may still be liable for entry costs (plus standard network costs).
 
7. No more than four text entries per person will be allowed during the promotional period.
 
8. The Aspinall Foundation does not accept any liability for any entries which are a result of technical malfunction whether through a website failure, lack of network service, service provider failure, virus or other technical malfunction for any entries which are lost, misdirected, delayed or corrupted. The Organisers do not accept any liability for any malfunction which means entrants are unable to cancel their donation nor any loss arising from entry to this competition.
 
9. The alternative method of entry into the Prize Draw is to send your name and telephone number on a postcard to Mobile Prize Draw, The Aspinall Foundation, Port Lympne Reserve, Hythe, Kent, CT21 4PD. To be included in the draw, these entries must be posted before the closing date.
 
10. The Prizes consist of the following:
 
a. Bear Lodge – a three night stay during the 2017 season for competition winner and up to 7 other people at Bear Lodge campsite located at Port Lympne Wild Animal Park. Accommodation & continental breakfast included. Booking subject to availability on winner’s preferred date. Not valid during the month of August. Information correct at time of print.
b. Livingstone Lodge – an overnight stay during the 2017 season for prize winner and one other person. Accommodation & food included. Drinks not included. Booking subject to availability on winner’s preferred date. One guest must be over 18 years old and neither guest can be under the age of 10.
c. VIP photography day – one place on a group one-day photography course during 2017 at either Howletts or Port Lympne Wild Animal Parks with in-house wildlife photographer Dave Rolfe. Restricted dates & booking subject to availability. Over 18 years old.
d. ½ hour primate experience – half hour up close encounter with the primates at Port Lympne Reserve in 2017. Booking subject to availability. Over 18 years old.
 
11. There are no cash alternatives for the prizes, and they cannot be sold, exchanged, transferred or bartered.
 
12. The winners will be drawn at random within 24 hours of the closing date of the competition. Winners will be notified by telephone with 24 hours of the draw being made. In the event that contact cannot be made within a further 24 hours, The Organisers reserve the right to withdraw prize entitlement and award the prize to a reserve drawn at the same time as the original.
 
13. Winners and companions must agree to comply with the terms and conditions of each prize won.
 
14. The Organisers shall have no liability for loss of any kind in the event that it has to cancel the prize or alter the time, date or location of the prize.
 
15. By entering the competition, all entrants and companions of winners grant The Organisers their permission to use and reproduce the photographs and/or footage throughout the world for any purpose in the media including but not limited to, its use in full or edited or amalgamated form on television programmes of any kind.
 
16. The winners and their companions may be required to take part in post-event publicity and entry shall be deemed to be consent to take park in such publicity as required by The Organisers.
 
17. The winners’ names and counties will be available upon request by writing to: Mobile Prize Draw Competition, Port Lympne Reserve, Hythe, Kent, CT21 4PD.
 
18. Personal data will be taken where necessary from all entries received but shall be limited to those details reasonably necessary for the administration of the competition. This information may be shared with The Aspinall Foundation and any other third party reasonably involved in the competition without liability to The Organisers or such third parties.
 
19. In the event that ‘The Organisers’ receive less than 400 entries into the competition by the closing date, just one prize winner will be drawn and will win the half hour primate experience at Port Lympne Reserve.

Tiger Toddle Thursday 9th June 2016
The Tiger Toddle (Event) is organised and operated by The Aspinall Foundation (Event Organiser).
1. By registering to participate in the Event, I declare that I will abide by the rules of the Event and that I shall be, at the date of the Event, fit and able to complete the Event and that the details given in the form are correct in all particulars.
2. I agree to abide by these terms and conditions of entry and any race instruction given to me by the Event Organisers or officials during the Event.
3. The Event Organisers are not taking any on the day registrations; therefore all registrations must be received in advance.
4. The entry fee is non-transferable and non-refundable.
Entry rules for participants
5. Due to the type of Event carers must take part in the run with their children, no child will be permitted to participate alone. The Event is designed for children up to the age of 5 years of age with their carers.
6. You are permitted to run with push chairs, however, please note that scooters, bikes and similar are not permitted within Port Lympne Reserve at any time.
7. Participants must pay the specified entry fee for each person participating.
Communications
8. By agreeing to these terms and conditions you will receive email communication from the Event Organisers, which will include latest updates and Event information.
9. All participants must write their name, details of any health problems or medication and
emergency contact name and number on the back of their Event number prior to the run starting.
10. In the case of an emergency the Event Organiser may use the details provided by you to contact your home or office or emergency contact.
11. The Event Organiser complies with the Data Protection Act 1988. We will use your personal
information to administer the Event and to send you details of further events.
Cancellation
12. If the Event is cancelled or delayed due to unforeseen circumstances, we will endeavour to stage the Event at a later date. In such circumstances, we will try to let you know in writing of the cancellation or delay.
13. I agree that should the Event be cancelled due to an event beyond the reasonable control of the Event Organisers including but not limited to: severe weather, terrorism, act of god, closure of the area by emergency services, medical advice or pandemic I will not be entitled to a refund of the entry fee.
Training and Medical conditions
14. It is strongly recommended that participants train and prepare for the toddle. If you have not exercised before or for sometime, or have a pre-existing medical condition, you should consult your doctor prior to the Event.
15. You understand that you are taking part in a toddle which may require me to undertake varying levels of exercise, including vigorous, for a prolonged period. You will have, if necessary, gained advice from your GP as to whether you are physically prepared to undertake the Event. You agree that you will take appropriate action to prepare myself for this Event. You also understand that you will only undertake the Event if you feel that you are physically able to do so.
Ejection

Sponsorship money
18. You have a legal responsibility to ensure that all sponsorship monies/donations received by you for the Event are paid to The Aspinall Foundation, Registered Charity No 326567.
19. Participants can hand their sponsor money direct to The Aspinall Foundation at registration on the morning of the Event. If you are unable to present your sponsorship money to the charity on the day of the Event, we ask that you show us proof of sponsorship raised (i.e. Sponsorship form).

20. By taking part in the Event, you give permission for the free use of your name, voice, footage or any photograph to be used in any broadcast, advertising, promotion, or in any future communications of The Aspinall Foundation.
21. By registering an under 16yr old as a participant, the parent or guardian confirms that they are happy for any footage or photographs taken which may feature the under 16yr old during their participation in the Event to be used in this way.
Risk and liability
22. All participants enter this Event entirely at their own risk and the Event Organisers shall not be liable for any injury or loss that might occur as a result of their participation other than as a result of the Event Organisers.
23. The Event Organisers take all reasonable steps to minimise the risk of injury to participants during the Event, including undertaking a detailed risk assessment which aims to minimise or eliminate the risk to everyone taking part. However, by taking part in this Event, you acknowledge that there may be conditions or circumstances beyond our control that can lead to unforeseen risks.
24. By entering the Event, you accept all the conditions of entry and acknowledge that, to the extent permitted by law, the organisers and sponsors shall have no liability to you and your team members for any injury, loss or damage, nor any consequential loss or damage suffered by me at or by reason of the Event.
25. No dogs are permitted at Port Lympne Reserve at any time.
 
Port Lympne Challenge Saturday 18th June 2016
The Port Lympne Challenge (Event) is organised and operated by The Aspinall Foundation (Event Organiser).
1. By registering to participate in the Event, I declare that I will abide by the rules of the Event and that I shall be, at the date of the Event, fit and able to complete the Event and that the details given in the form are correct in all particulars.
2. I agree to abide by these terms and conditions of entry and any race instruction given to me by the Event Organisers or officials during the Event.
3. The Event Organisers are not taking any on the day registrations; therefore all registrations must be received in advance.
4. The entry fee is non-transferable and non-refundable.
Entry rules for participants
5. Minimum age for participation 16 years old 
6. Event route is not suitable for buggies, prams or wheel chairs. 
7. Please note that scooters, bikes and similar are not permitted within Port Lympne Reserve at any time.
8. Only registered participants are eligible to take part in the Event.
9. All participants agree to follow the instructions of the event organisers. Failure to do so may result in ejection from the event. 
10. Please note, due to the terrain and environment at Port Lympne Reserve, some parts of the route are uneven. Therefore for safety reasons, some parts of the route will be walking only, this will be advised in the on the day briefing and by route signage.
Communications
11. By agreeing to these terms and conditions you will receive email communication from the Event Organisers, which will include latest updates and Event information.
12. All participants must write their name, details of any health problems or medication and
emergency contact name and number on the back of their Event number prior to the run starting.
12. In the case of an emergency the Event Organiser may use the details provided by you to contact your home or emergency contact.
13. The Event Organiser complies with the Data Protection Act 1988. We will use your personal
information to administer the Event and to send you details of further events.
Cancellation
14. If the Event is cancelled or delayed due to unforeseen circumstances, the Event Organisers will endeavour to stage the Event at a later date. In such circumstances, we will try to let you know in writing of the cancellation or delay.
15. I agree that should the Event be cancelled due to an event beyond the reasonable control of the Event Organisers including but not limited to: severe weather, terrorism, act of god, closure of the area by emergency services, medical advice or pandemic I will not be entitled to a refund of the entry fee.
Training and Medical conditions
16. It is strongly recommended that all participants train and prepare for the run. If a participant has not exercised before or for sometime, or have a pre-existing medical condition, you should consult your doctor prior to the Event.
17. As a participant, you understand that you are taking part in a challenge which may require you to undertake varying levels of exercise, including vigorous, for a prolonged period. You will have, if necessary, gained advice from your GP as to whether I am physically prepared to undertake the Event. You agree that you will take appropriate action to prepare myself for this Event. You also understand that you will only undertake the Event if you feel that you are physically able to do so.
Ejection

Open Air Cinema
  1. Open Air Cinemas are all weather outdoor events that will go ahead in most weather conditions. 
  2. All patrons under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Parents or guardians are responsible for any under 18 attending the event with them. Further recommended age restrictions are based on each individual screening.
  3. If the event is cancelled for any reason, an alternative date will be provided, all tickets will be transferred to the alternative date and no refunds will be issued.
  4. Glass bottles or other items made of glass are not permitted on the site at any time.
  5. Whilst bins will be provided at the site, we do request that you take all rubbish home with you.
  6. As this event takes place outside, The Aspinall Foundation will endeavour to ensure that the event site is prepared prior to the event.
  7. For Drive In events, your booking confirmation will act as your ticket to the event and must be presented immediately upon request from a member of the team at the event.
  8. For Sit Down events, we ask that you exchange your booking confirmation for the appropriate number of wristbands at our ticket exchange upon arrival.
  9. At Sit Down events, you will be sitting on the ground; it is your responsibility to ensure that you bring appropriate resources for doing this. Please note if you choose to bring chairs you may be asked to move if you obstruct the view of other guests.
  10. For Drive In events, sound will be streamed over FM radio and parking will be managed to ensure that larger vehicles do not block the view for smaller vehicles.
  11. By entering the event site you agree to being filmed or photographed which may be used for marketing or promotional purposes. 
  12. The Aspinall Foundation reserves the right to cancel or reschedule the event and times without notice.
  13. The Aspinall Foundation reserves the right of admission and can refuse admission if considered necessary.
  14. It is a condition of sale that tickets may not be offered for re-sale on 3rd party websites such as eBay or Gumtree. Tickets may not be resold or offered for resale at a premium (including online auction sites) or used for advertising, promotion or other commercial purposes. If a ticket is used in breach of these conditions, it may be cancelled without refund and the bearer of the ticket may be refused admission.
  15. Tickets cannot be transferred to another Open Air Cinema event under any circumstances except in the case of an event cancellation.
  16. Tickets can only be purchased through the official website of The Aspinall Foundation.
  17. You have a duty to exercise good judgment and act in a responsible manner while attending the Open Air Cinema and you agree that you will comply with the directions of The Aspinall Foundation staff and its authorised representatives at all times. The Aspinall Foundation reserves the right to turn customers away should they appear intoxicated or behave inappropriately.
  18. You acknowledge that you attend at your own risk and that you are not, to the best of your knowledge, suffering from a condition which would prevent and/or render you unfit to attend. The purchaser or user of the ticket voluntarily assumes the risk of injury, property damage or loss while attending the Open Air Cinema. You agree to take all reasonable measures to protect yourself from the risks generated by attending.
  19. You agree to wear adequate clothing and footwear for an all-weather outdoor event, suited to the time of year, and the weather conditions on the day. Wear suitable shoes and weather protection especially when the weather has been wet.
  20. You are responsible for all property that you bring to the event and The Aspinall Foundation accepts no responsibility for loss or damage to this property.
  21. You agree to not cause any loss or damage to property at the event.
  22. You understand that there are inherent and other risks associated with attending an outdoor all-weather event. You release The Aspinall Foundation (including its directors, officers, employees, volunteers, contractors, sponsors and/or agents) from any claim and from any liability to the maximum extent permitted by law for, or as a result of, any loss, injury or damage suffered by you in relation to your attendance and participation in the event, however caused, including any claim or liability which arises due to any negligence of the event organisers.
  23. You are aware that Open Air Cinemas attract considerable media interest. By purchasing your ticket and/or attending the event you are agreeing for your name, photograph and/or footage of you to be used for promotional or advertising purposes.
  24. In the event of a late arrival, The Aspinall Foundation will endeavour to allow you access to the film. However access for late arrivals is not guaranteed and on these occasions no refunds will be given.

Questions about the parks

  • Where is Port Lympne/Howletts?

    Howletts is in Bekesbourne and is signposted off the A2, three miles south of Canterbury. We're just 90 minutes from London.

    Port Lympne is in Lympne near Hythe. Leave the M20 at Junction 11 and follow the brown tourist signs to the park (about 5 minutes drive from the motorway).

  • How much time does it take to go round the parks?

    To fully enjoy the parks we recommend that you allow about 3 hours for Howletts, and about 4-5 hours for Port Lympne.

  • Do you drive through in your car?

    No, your car is left at the car park and you walk through the park, however there is an African & Asian Experience safari ride available at Port Lympne.

  • What is the entry fee for the parks?

    See current admission prices for Howletts or Port Lympne.

    Students cannot purchase tickets on-line with an NUS card - have to show card at gate on entry.

    Discounted tickets are sometimes available online for single visit entry. Membership tickets can also be purchased online or on entry to the parks or alternatively a ticket purchased online can be upgraded to a Membership ticket at the admissions desk.

  • Which park is more accessible for the disabled?

    Howletts is the smaller and flatter of the parks and is therefore more accessible for the disabled. Port Lympne lies on hilly terrain and as a result is quite steep in places. There are, however, selected routes suitable for wheelchair users. There are reduced admission prices for disabled visitors.

  • How much does it cost to run the parks?

    It costs around £5 million per year to run the parks.

  • What other activities are there?

    Gift shops, play areas Experience days & Enrichment Workshops, keeper talks during school holiday periods and other seasonal activities e.g. Easter, Halloween.

  • How many animals/species do you have at the parks?

    Howletts - 400 animals, 44 species (approximately)

    Port Lympne - 500 animals, 50 species (approximately)

  • Who owns the parks now Mr Aspinall has passed away?

    The parks are owned by The Aspinall Foundation, a registered charity. Mr Aspinall's son, Damian, now runs the park.

  • What do Howletts & Port Lympne Wild Animal Parks do?

    Howletts and Port Lympne are extensively involved in exchange and breeding programmes throughout the world and have had many breeding successes for e.g. 25 black rhinos and over 100 gorillas bred between the two parks. Howletts was the first to breed African elephants in the UK.

    The parks are not only involved in conservation at home but across the world with two protected areas in the Congo and Gabon in Africa of around a million acres of forest for the rehabilitation and reintroduction of gorillas into the wild.

    The Aspinall Foundation in conjunction with Howletts and Port Lympne Wild Animal Parks are devoted to saving rare and endangered animals and returning them to protected areas in the wild.

  • Are the parks open to the public?

    Yes. Both open everyday except Christmas Day. Summer - 9.30am until 6.30pm, last admission 3:00pm, Winter - 9.30am until 5pm last admission 2:30pm. Summer and Winter opening periods begin and end roughly when the clocks change.

  • How did the parks start?

    Mr Aspinall founded both parks. He purchased Howletts in 1958 and opened the doors to the public in 1975. He then purchased Port Lympne in 1973 to house the ever increasing population of animals at Howletts and opened to the public in 1976.

  • What are the sizes of the parks?

    Howletts - 95 acres, Port Lympne - 600 acres with 15 acres of beautiful landscaped gardens and a historic mansion, which is available to hire for weddings, corporate functions, private parties e.t.c.

  • Can I bring my dog?

    Unfortunately we do not allow dogs into the parks. Please do not leave dogs in your car. We recommend that you find alternative arrangements for your dogs while you visit.

Questions about the animals

  • Are the animals in cages?

    No, the animals are in large enclosures designed to resemble their natural habitat as closely as possible. The most recent enclosures built are the Pallas Cat enclosure at Port Lympne and the walk through Lemur enclosure at Howletts.

  • Is it right to keep animals in captivity?

    Deforestation and slaughter for the bush meat trade are bringing many animals closer and closer towards extinction. It is of course best for animals to live in the wild but until such time that the poaching and cutting down of forests ends, organisations such as ours help secure their survival.

    The parks keep the animals in as near natural environments as possible and provide a lifeline for many of these species.

    Howletts and Port Lympne have in fact been pioneers in the way we keep animals. Our animals are not exhibits, but live in conditions as close as possible to their natural habitat. For example, our gorillas live in deep straw, simulating the forest floor, which allows them to forage all day for food as they would in the wild. They receive over 200 different types of food and live in family groups. Keepers are encouraged to bond with their animals improving the standard of life for both keeper and animal.

  • How much does it cost to feed the animals per annum?

    Just under £1 million per annum. We grow hay, maize, beet, kale and Lucerne on land that we own. We also have woodlands that are used for harvesting browse for animal feed.

  • What types of animals are at the parks?

    Mostly rare and endangered animals.

    Howletts is home to the largest herd of African elephants in the UK and the largest breeding group of Western Lowland gorillas in human care in the World.

    At Port Lympne there is the "Palace of the Apes" one of the world's largest family gorilla houses, Barbary lions, and the largest captive breeding herd of black rhino outside Africa.

    Both parks have many more rare and endangered animals including leaf-eating monkeys, wolves, tapirs, bongo, red pandas, tigers, clouded leopards and Pallas cats.

Questions about fundraising

  • If I adopt an animal, will I be the only person who adopts that animal?

No, you will not be the only person. The adoption schemes have named animals that act as figureheads for each species. Everyone can adopt the same named animals for each species, and the money raised goes towards The Aspinall Foundation's conservation work. This makes it easier for us to provide feedback on a few adopted animals, rather than many individual ones, and keeps our administration costs to a minimum, ensuring that more of our valuable funds are used for our conservation work.

Please note: the legal ownership of the animal you adopt or sponsor will remain with Howletts Wild Animal Trust who has the responsibility for animal welfare and care. It will not always be possible for one of our keepers to help you identify the animal you adopt if you are visiting our parks.

  • What happens if my adopted animal dies or is sent to another collection?

If your adopted animal dies or moves away, we will let you know as soon as possible, by emailing you individually. We will continue to use your donation for the conservation work saving rare and endangered animals. When we email you we will usually be able to offer an alternative named animal to replace the one that has been lost.

  • Adopt an Animal Administration Details

Please note that for administrative reasons not all of the package benefits are available immediately, and some of them will be sent over the coming months.

  • On our receipt of your completed online animal adoption form we will thank you for your kind support and send the personalised certificate, wallpaper and fact sheet of your adopted animal within 24 hours.
  • Each month you will receive your edition of WildCry online providing you with the latest news and events from the Wild Animal Parks and overseas projects. This will be sent to the email address you provided at the time of adoption, please feel free to forward a copy on to anyone you think would be interested in our work. Twice yearly you will receive an e-mail update on the animal you have adopted.
  • If you choose to receive an adoption day ticket or A-Card with your adoption you will receive a collection letter by post within 10 working days. Your day ticket is valid for use at either Howletts or Port Lympne Wild Animal Parks. This ticket can be used for one day entry for one person except for Bank Holidays. The A –Card is valid for use at either Howletts or Port Lympne Wild Animal Parks for unlimited entry for the holder, subject to continued monthly/annual payments being received and we reserve the right to cancel the pass if payments stop. We will send you an email/letter to inform you if a cancellation occurs.
  • Booking forms for Keeper Experience will be sent within 10 working days.

The Aspinall Foundation needs to raise over £1 million each year to fund our vital animal conservation programmes in Africa, Java and Madagascar helping to protect some of the world’s most endangered species.  For this reason we set up the animal adoption programme as a way for supporters to help fund this work each year with a regular gift. As a way to say thank you for this ongoing support we included a number of benefits to the adoption. These benefits include updates on your adopted animal, regular emails about the work of The Aspinall Foundation and the opportunity to visit your adopted animal at our wild animal parks in Kent. There are administrative costs to run this programme and to make it as cost effective as possible we desperately need people to support us long term. Please be aware that if two adoptions are setup and cancelled after 3 or less payments are made we reserve the right to cancel your benefits and may make the decision to not set up future adoptions.

Our parks are very different from conventional zoos. The animals, which include rare and endangered species, are able to live and breed in conditions as close to their natural habitat as possible. This can mean that when the weather is inclement some of our animals will seek shelter in their indoor enclosures, which are always open to them but not on view to the public and you may want to consider this when planning your visit.

  • If you are a loss making charity, how do you survive?

Visitors help pay for almost half the running costs, the rest is met from donations from the public and trusts.

  • How can I support The Aspinall Foundation?

There are plenty of ways to support the charity, such as direct debit donations, one off donations, payroll giving, animal adoption, Gift Aid and legacies.

  • What is face-to-face (street) fundraising?

Professional fundraisers work on public high streets to collect, via Direct Debit, regular monthly donations for charity.

  • Why does The Aspinall Foundation use this method of fundraising?

Face to face is a proven method of recruiting new, regular donors and is cost-effective. It is particularly successful in recruiting younger and more affluent donors who tend not to respond to other types of fundraising. At any one time an average of 50 charities are involved in face to face activity.

  • Who are the fundraisers and how will I know they are genuine?

The fundraisers are typically aged between 18-30. They work between 10 - 6pm, and wear a logo'd Aspinall Foundation jacket or t-shirt with the registered charity number on it and carry an ID badge with their photo.

  • What do I do if I wish to make a query or a complaint?

The Public Fundraising Regulatory Association (PFRA) is a self regulating membership body established to co-ordinate fundraising activity and promote quality, integrity and transparency. The PFRA works with charities, professional fundraising organisations, Local Authorities and the Police to ensure high standards in the industry and to resolve complaints. All fundraisers carry a copy of the PFRA Code of Practice.
