At 10 am on the 21st September 2 year old Jake, Jenson, Iona, Braiden and Connor set off on their way to complete their 1 mile walk, they needed a little encouragement at times but enjoyed their pit stop to refuel with a lollipop each to encourage them to the end. They were joined by 15 of their family members who also completed the walk.
Jenson’s mother, Honey explained why they chose to support the ‘One Mile Challenge’......
We took Jenson to the zoo for his 2nd birthday in April and since then we have visited both Howletts and Port Lympne several times as he loves the animals and talks about his visits for weeks after. We also adopted a giraffe and decided to go and see it, this was on the 23rd June which happened to be the day the gorilla family began their journey Back to the Wild. We returned a couple of weeks later and saw the posters for the one mile challenge on the empty gorilla enclosure which spurred the initial thought of getting Jenson to do a sponsored walk. He seemed keen to do it and we bought him a cuddly gorilla which he named Djala (team mascot). We wanted to raise as much money as possible and called upon Jensons fellow toddler group members to join in and as they are also keen animal lovers who visit animal parks regularly, Djalas Kidz was formed.
We are so proud of what they have achieved, I know it is only a mile which is easy for us adults but it must have felt like a marathon for them. Not only that but they raised much more money than we anticipated. This will certainly be something for the scrap books and we hope it will encourage them to be involved in conservation in the future.
We would like to thank Djalas Kidz for raising an amazing amount of over £340 to The Aspinall Foundation. Their support and determination is very much appreciated.
