Javan Gibbon Group
As with all gibbon species, the Javan gibbon is endangered. Their range is restricted to small areas of western and central Java where they live in monogamous family groups with parents and juvenile offspring making up the social structure. They live almost entirely in the trees and can be highly aggressive to other gibbons entering their territory.
Our group of gibbons at Port Lympne consists of dominant male Lupau who was born on 24/07/1984 and came to us from Munich in 2007. He’s something of a quiet loner and prefers to keep to himself.
The dominant female was Yoni who was born on 10/05/1991 and was originally from Howletts, but sadly she passed away in late 2011.
The group’s offspring include Gapak who was born to Yoni on 27/02/2006 when they were still at Howletts, and female Baru who was born on 19/06/2009 at Port Lympne.
We also have male Galih, a wild born animal from the Schmutzer primate centre in Indonesia who is now around 12 years old.
